Picking up your car at Tivat Airport
Tivat Airport (TIV) is the airport on the Bay of Kotor, 3 km from Tivat and 8.5 km from Kotor, run by Airports of Montenegro. Every car offered from Tivat in the booking form can be handed over at the airport itself, and a rental agent meets you at the time and place given in your booking; some cars charge a handover fee, and each car shows it before you book.
This page covers what happens between landing and driving away: the arrival hall, where the car meets you, how long the drives along the bay take, and what to allow for when you bring the car back before your flight.
What happens when you land at Tivat Airport?
After passport control you collect your hold baggage from the belt, and before you leave the arrival area of the terminal you pass through the red and green channels for customs. The rental agent will be waiting at the time and place you specified in your booking, and the voucher carries the agent's phone number, so you can call if the flight runs late.
Before you drive off, inspect the bodywork, the interior, the windows and the tyres, check the fuel level, and make sure all of it is written into the acceptance report you sign.
Can every car be collected at Tivat Airport?
Yes. Every car in the search from Tivat can be handed over at Tivat Airport. Some hand over at the airport for free and some charge a fee, and each car shows that fee before you book, next to its deposit, its excess, the mileage and the cancellation terms. A car can also be brought to a hotel or an address in town instead, as a city delivery, again with its own fee shown. Fewer cars are on offer at Tivat in summer than in the rest of the year.
Pick Tivat Airport in the pick-up field of the booking form and the results are the cars that can meet you there. Hire car bookings in Montenegro through this site always show each car's conditions before you pay, so the handover is not a surprise.

Some cars need a physical embossed credit card in the main driver's name, and some rental companies accept a debit card instead, which the booking and the voucher state; bring the card the booking names.
The minimum driver age and years of licence are set per car and shown on its page, and they can differ even between similar models. What does the standard insurance cover on the hire car?
Third-party liability, the equipment kit and VAT are included on every car; collision damage cover and its higher levels are extras on the cars that offer them, and the excess is set per car. The standard insurance does not cover the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen or the interior.
After an accident, tell the rental agent straight away and get a police report, unless the agent agrees otherwise; without them the insurance on the car is cancelled. The car may only be driven on paved public roads. The minimum charge is 24 hours, so a hire of a few hours is charged as a full day. If you want to extend the hire, tell the rental agent in advance.

Can you drive from Tivat Airport to Podgorica Airport or abroad?
Inside Montenegro, yes: a car collected at Tivat Airport can be returned at Podgorica Airport, 82.6 km away and about 1 hour 47 minutes, and the price each car shows for a one-way hire already includes its one-way fee. Choose Podgorica Airport in the drop-off tab of the form.
Crossing a border is a per-car option. Dubrovnik Airport is 51.1 km and about 1 hour 15 minutes from Tivat Airport, but only a car that offers the cross-border option for Croatia can make the trip, the rental agent must be told in advance, and the car comes back to Montenegro: no hire ends abroad.
What should you allow for when you return the car before your flight?
Check-in counters at Tivat Airport open 120 minutes before the scheduled departure and close 30 minutes before it, so the car handover has to be finished well before the counters close. Agree the return time and place with the rental agent when you collect the car. The car goes back with the same fuel level it had at pick-up; if it is lower, you pay the difference at the rental company's rates, and if it is higher you are not paid back. Tivat and the surrounding area have Petrol, EKO and Lukoil stations, but many close at 21:00 to 22:00 in the colder months, so fill up before a late return.
Tivat Airport does not run its own car park; there is a public paid car park next to the airport, which matters if someone is dropping you off or meeting you. Parking spaces for passengers with reduced mobility are marked in the first row closest to the terminal.
Which cities fly to Tivat Airport?
Tivat runs a seasonal timetable. On the airport's own list on 25 September 2026 the destinations included London Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton and Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol, Amsterdam, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Orly, Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Istanbul, Vienna, Zurich, Belgrade and Tel Aviv. The airline sets the schedule, so check your own flight with the airline.
Tivat Airport opened on 1 May 1957 with a grass runway; the rebuilt airport, with an asphalt runway 2,500 m long and 45 m wide, opened on 25 September 1971. More than 80% of the airport's traffic comes in the summer season.
Winter tyres with at least 4 mm of tread are compulsory from 15 November to 1 April, and most cars list a winter pack for those months.
